6/21/10 11:30 am.  Greetings all! Checking in from Camp Durant. We got here safe and sound and all set up. It was/is very hot, we were all drenched in perspiration . It did cool off late at night. The scouts are all safe and sound the young ones having fun.The scouts are off at merit badge classes this am. Last night for dinner we had chicken parmagian, and this am eggs bacon, bisquit and gravy. There was an opening campfire where the staff did some good skits, then the guys came back and hit the trading post for slush puppies. Its still and hot, but we have coolers, ice and water. Some of the guys even took showers, and many are in the lake as I type.
Check the troop web site for links to pictures. I’ll try and upload every day. If you go to Camp Durant.com there are web cams. One out front in the assembly area, look for us at 745am and5:45 pm and one in the dining hall.

Day Two- We survived another night! Everyone is doing well. Scouts are in their routines, taking badges, having fun. The “Roos got to shoot shotgun, learn knife safety, knots and more, Mr Brown is a task master! Mr Freeman held down the campsite, so much so he got wind burn on his face from his fan! Dinner was roast beef and mashed taters, breakfast was sausage and waffles.  I’m enjoying the scoutmaster meeting because its indoor and AC! Our senior patrol leader, a true rocket scientist, has devised a duty roster that only he can understand, but things seem to be getting done. We are keeping them hydrated and on the move. See everyone on Wednesday. More pictures will be posted later in the day, check the web site for the link.

Day 3-4-

Camp Durant Update Number 3

Greetings all from the Sandhills! Things are going great . On Wednesday the scouts continued their work on merit badges and other activities. In the afternoon we prepared for the family night dinner. Thanks to everyone who came down and supported the troop. We had close to 100 scouts and parents for dinner. The dinner consisted of grilled pork chops, Mr Browns famous Macaroni and Cheese, a delicious fruit sald prepared by the Kangaroos, a homemade carrot and raisin salad, also complements of the “roos, a rice concoction with rasins, pineapple, butter and brown sugar, the result of a demented fred fantasy, and 8 pineapple upside down cakes prepared by the cooking merit badge class.

For entertainment the scouts performed two skits that had been thought out, rehearsed and directed by mike lanzone. After dinner we went to the Wed night campfire and had a great fire of skits performed b by the staff, followed by an Order of the Arrow Call Out Ceremony. During the ceremony Beck O and Patrick B were recognized as having been elected to the scouting honor society.  Congratulations to them.

In addition the troop has won the coveted Spirit Stick for Wed. They had a great campsite inspection score and showed lots of enthusiasim at formations and all. We get to keep it for a day . At the end  of the week the troop with the most spirit gets to keep it.

We also had contests for best and most colorful hawaiann shirt, cleanest and neatest tent. They were judged by moms and sisters. The neat niks were Austin and Patrick and the cleanest were Mike L and Beck. Lucas J and Patrick D got shirt awards.

Many thanks to Robert Brake and Parker Foster for helping us out the fist half of the week. They have now turned duties over to Steve Lochbaum and Stuart Campbell. I’m not sure how much help Steve will be, he is currently stuck halfway to carthage. He went for a bike ride and has a flat tire. We decided to send someone after him.

This morning the “Roos had the honor of raising the colors at morning assembly.  They had practiced hard and were outstanding! The best of the week if I do say so myself. In addition, Bo and Jackson wrote and performed another original song. Although I don’t think they should plan on doing that for a career!

That’s all for now. I’ll post pictures after lunch. I don’t want to post them now since then I would have no reason to come sit in the ac!

See you soon.

P.S. If you are coming to camp to pick us up, please try and arrive at 9 am, that should be about 30 minutes earlier than planned. We should be back in Raleigh before 11 am, at the church. Please do no t pick up your child and leave before we have unloaded all the trailers! The scoutmasters want to go home too!

Day 4-5- Well we survived the record heat. The scouts finished up merit badges, i think everyone is doing well, at least they said they are.  The troop put together a raft for the Huck FInn race. It was amazing, it actually floated! and to boot, Spencer and Deane paddled/swam it to a second place finish, go figure. Today we work on finishing badges and this afternoon is the tomohawk race. After retiring from cycling, Steve L relishes ups with stories of "the one that got away". Garden has given everyone their money, whats left of it, and meds, he is finished.

We'll see our rides by 9 am in the morning
